Biography

Monica Alandete-Saez

Director of Analyses & Outreach

Monica Alandete is the Director of Analysis & Outreach of PIPRA. She is also a patent agent registered to practice law before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (#73260).

Monica was born in Valencia, Spain, and she obtained a B.Sc. degree in biochemistry at the University of Valencia, Spain in 1999. Monica then moved to England to complete a M.Sc. in plant biotechnology at the University of Sussex, Brighton and a Ph.D. in plant molecular biology at the University of Nottingham (UK). She completed two postdoctoral positions at the University of California Berkeley and Davis between 2006 and 2009, during which she published research papers in leading scientific journals such as Science and Gene & Development.

Monica joined PIPRA in 2009. Her team creates Patent Landscapes, Due Diligence and Freedom-to-Operate reports to both for-profit and not-for-profit organizations, and provides advice for strategic decision-making in product commercialization. Monica also provides leadership for PIPRA’s outreach and education programs, including strategic management in implementing a platform of activities that supports training and capacity-building programs targeting research institutions, surrounding intellectual property management and technology transfer in emerging economies.

She also organizes international courses and workshops focused on intellectual property and technology transfer to promote innovation, such as the "Licensing Academy," held every summer on campus at UC Davis, and the "Academia de Licenciamiento" held every December in La Paz, Mexico.
